Legitimisation is a procedure for defining the status of the children of unmarried parents, In Jersey this draws significantly on the rules of the civil law, which differ in some important respects from those of common law jurisdictions. The procedure often has bearing on questions of succession and for that reason legitimisation issues generally are referred to our probate department.
