Who We Are

Viberts is an established practice, which has long been well regarded in Jersey but also attracts work from clients and correspondents outside the island who appreciate our ability to combine legal acumen with value for money.

The firm was established in the 1930s by the Vibert brothers, one of whom went on to become the island’s Solicitor General and, as a politician, the architect of Jersey’s remarkably successful relationship with the European Union. The firm has since merged with two other practices.

Among the partners, Advocate Charles Thacker is President of the Jersey Law Society and chairs the Social Security Appeal Tribunal; Advocate Christopher Scholefield is in demand as a lecturer and speaker in the island and in Europe, particularly on the subject of the newly introduced Jersey Foundation; Advocate Rose Colley chaired the review of the Jersey Legal Aid rules in 2006 and is on the steering group of the newly established Jersey Law Institute; and Advocate Zoë Blomfield chairs the Social Security Medical Appeals Tribunal and played a leading role in the introduction of collaborative law to Jersey.

In Jersey the firm is well known for its litigation practice and the work of the island’s largest family law group, led by Rose Colley. The senior partners are qualified barristers, well accustomed to court work and with good relationships with leading chambers in London.

Viberts also operates full service private client and property practices. Advocate James Lawrence’s well-regarded conveyancing and property department acts for high street institutional lenders, commercial developers and private clients alike.

Our very practical background informs the ethos of Viberts’ growing commercial and
corporate practice. The commercial team understands that corporate clients too have financial responsibilities to manage, knows when to be pragmatic and when to take a stand, never forgets that its client’s affairs could one day be the subject of scrutiny in court and knows how to manage its transactional work in time and on budget.
