Viberts’ origins trace back to two firms founded in Jersey in the 1930s by Advocates Vibert and Hooper Valpy. Legal practice at that time largely consisted of land transactions, commercial work linked to tourism, succession planning and litigation. The offshore finance industry began to take root after 1962, when the island abolished the provision of its code of laws of 1771. Viberts flourished from the boom in property, banking, trust, securitisation, regulatory and company law.
As all areas of Jersey law were brought up to date, Viberts was at the forefront of the revolution in the island’s matrimonial laws and consolidated its busy litigation practice. During the 1980s, the two firms K Hooper Valpy & Co and Viberts merged, forming Viberts Jersey Lawyers. The firm maintained its reputation for expertise in litigation and established close ties with leading sets of London chambers.
Advocate Rose Colley joined Viberts in 2000 and lost no time in creating Jersey’s pre-eminent family law department, which remains the largest in the island. From these beginnings, Viberts has developed into a full service law firm. Our partners advise on all areas of Jersey law and are equipped to pursue our clients’ interests all the way to the Judicial Committee of the Privy Council, if need be.
